What is a seven-fold tie?

7 Fold Tie

Author: Beth Aston

If there's one accessory that will seamlessly elevate a neatly tailored suit from smart and sophisticated to exceptionally elegant, it's a seven-fold tie.

A sartorial step-up from the paisley, polka dot and striped neckwear you'll no doubt already have hanging neatly from a rack in your closet, this is a true Jermyn Street gentleman's style staple and something that takes real skill to produce.

Wondering exactly what goes into the creation of this luxurious product? It's a very lengthy process, typically taking ten times longer than its classic cousin. After the fabric has been carefully cut, the tie is artfully folded it into itself seven times to create volume and structure. As a result of this layering, the tie's knot is larger in appearance too.

Although the seven-fold tie is championed by dapper dressers around the globe today, its advent in men's fashion dates back to the late 19th century. Parisian shirtmaker Washington Tremlett is credited with first stitching one for an American customer in 1892. Fast forward to the 1920s, and seven-fold ties were the reserve of well-healed members of society.

Production of such pieces sadly saw a rapid decline the following decade. Not only were they deemed to be too labour intensive, priorities changed with the onset of the Second World War and silk once used to make high-end garments was instead needed for the manufacture of parachutes.

But in a bid to revive an almost forgotten art in the 1980s, Californian tailor Robert Talbott set about putting seven-fold ties back on the style map. Successfully doing so, the Talbott family achieved this by assembling a small team headed up by artisan Lydia Grayson, someone with 60 years' experience in the craft.

New for SS19, T.M.Lewin's collection of seven-fold ties are guaranteed to set you apart from your peers. Comprised of twelve unique styles priced at £49.95, it's with confidence we say there'll be a design to suit all fashion preferences.

While they're certainly an obvious choice for formal occasions like a wedding or charity dinner, we ask you to consider introducing a couple into your workwear wardrobe. You won't regret it. The perfect final flourish for a form-fitting two-piece, impeccably ironed white shirt and pair of freshly polished Derby shoes, a seven-fold tie will help you exude an air of authority in the boardroom. To bring a seasonal pop of colour to a dark jacket and trousers, go for a bright shade. Or if you're looking for added appeal, why not try a pin spot pattern?

When it comes to fastening your seven-fold tie, we think it'd be pretty hard to go wrong with a timeless four-in-hand knot. Simple to master but effective in appearance, this top knot-ch method works well with any shape of collar be it a classic or cutaway.
