ANC unveils designs for new national jackets

08/02/2010 18:40:00

The African National Congress (ANC) has designed a range of patriotic jackets to inspire a sense of collective identity among its supporters, reports reveal.

Using the South African colours black, green and gold, the line of women's and men's jackets have not earned high regard from the country's fashion insiders.

Commenting on the effort, fashion designer Thula Sindi told the BBC: "I wouldn't be caught dead in them. It's all just looks like patchwork.

"I don't think anybody younger than 40 would wear that, out of fear of being ridiculed. For what it is, they are OK. I still wouldn't be caught dead in one."

The jackets range from military style to school blazers in bright colours that have been said to detract from the design.

ANC has been the governing party of post-apartheid South Africa since 1994. Last year, it retained 65.9 per cent of votes.
