Buying key pieces of clothing and women's accessories is a "privileged" and "fun" experience for many discerning shoppers.
That is according to fashion and beauty expert Caryn Franklin, who suggests that having something new should be savoured and treated as a useful confidence boost.
She said: "A great item of clothing becomes a helpful tool for women to give a good account of themselves in this performance oriented world.
"Clothes and accessories induce feelings of pleasure, security and confidence. To find all that in one hit is enormously satisfying."
A national survey carried out by Clothes Show Live found that women would prefer to bag a must-have purchase than their ideal man.
The results revealed that British women, on average, spend £137 on a personal shopping trip and £68 on gifts for their partners.
Earlier this month, Mintel reported that high street retail sales are still growing in volume and value as Christmas approaches.
